Vanessa and James invited me to photograph their intimate backyard wedding at their family’s property on Nantucket, and boy did it surpass any expectations that I had for a backyard wedding. Vanessa and James are both creative thinkers, and Vanessa is even a photographer herself (the pressure was on). When I arrived at their home I was immediately greeted by two dogs and a bright orange vintage VW car. I would later find out that there were actually four dogs and a parrot present at this wedding, to the delight of everyone who attended. As a side note, I held a parrot for the first time and I still haven’t recovered from it. I entered their reception space to find a thoughtfully designed room full of candles, sea shells, and a few paintings left in the corners, as this space is normally used for her father’s painting. To top the evening off, they built a twinkle light structure for their first dance.
Everything was so intentional at this wedding, and it was intimate and full of belly laughs and good food. Let’s be honest, we all need more brides who dress in a little color on their wedding days too. I hope for many more weddings on this lovely island!
